Overview...

La Chureca, Nicaragua is where it all started and inspired the creation of Mi Casa Charities organization.

La Chureca is another name for the Managua City Dump located in Nicaraga. There are 1.4 million people living in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and for the last 30 years, their garbage has been dumped and is accruing daily in La Chureca. Unfortunately, more than just garbage and vultures reside within the boundaries of La Chureca. There is also a community of about 1500 people that live within this dump.

The conditions are unimaginable - children walk barefoot where most of us would flinch to walk in sneakers.  Many of them, even as young as four are hooked on sniffing glue, because it kills their hunger pains. As a result, their hair turns blond because of severe malnutrition.  Girls younger than 12 are forced into prostitution and sell their bodies for basic needs. Fires sprout up randomly because of the concentration of chemicals in the ground. The adults and children alike spend long, backbreaking days sorting through the garbage of Managua, searching for metal and glass to sell or exchange for food.
